The sixth annual Onizuka Day of Exploration (ODE) will be held on Saturday, April 23rd from 8:00am – 3:00pm This year ODE will be both virtual and in-person. Scout units on Oahu are invited to attend in person and neighbor island units are encouraged to attend the event online. Formerly known as Scout Makahiki, this is the longest continually running Scout event in the country. This will be the 111th year for the Scout Makahiki – now called Onizuka Day of Exploration. ODE is Hawaii’s largest and most exciting family-friendly STEM event. ODE honors the legacy and memory of Eagle Scout and Astronaut Ellison Onizuka. This year Aloha Council is partnering with the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum for the in-person event.
More than 50 booths will have activities presented by Scouts BSA troops, Cub Scout Packs and community organizations. A few of the activities include launching compressed air rockets, making ice cream, a knot tying competition, fishing and casting activity, cork shooting, making airplane gliders, forensic science activity, and much more.
Special events will include a presentation and workshop by NASA space flight astronaut Dr. Michael Reed Barratt, special workshops throughout the day, a VEX Robotics competition and demonstration, a cow eye dissection demonstration, a knot tying competition, military exhibits, Pinewood Derby tournament and Aviation Merit Badge classes. Some of the workshops and activities will be streamed live through the virtual platform.
